Can't connect to DB

Description
When I first try to install the Webinterface I'm running into issues trying to connect to the DB.
I know that all the fields supplied are correct via phpMyAdmin as well as logging on with them locally, but when I attempt to log on via the Glastopf Webinterface installer I get a "Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) MySQL-Host: ".
I've set the folder permissions via chmod and the webinterface detects that the directory is writeable, so what am I doing wrong? I get the impression that it's some kind of permission issue somewhere but I'm a very novice mysql user so I'm not sure what to do next.
Any help would be appreciated!
